Improving Ball Handling  [edit]

Although there are many useful drills that will help players improve their ball handling skills.  No ball handling drill will simulate game situations more and reinforce dribbling confidence; than playing against tough competition!

I vividly remember early on in my playing career, how I wanted nothing more than to show my defenders/spectators/teammates and coaches, "how much ball control I had."  The ability to go left, go right, crossover, take it between my legs (forwards and backwards), and make the crowd pleasing pass at will; all appealed to me!

Although I diligently followed my daily ball-handling practice routines (and improved), when it came time to play against older more seasoned/serious players; something was missing???

I was over-dribbling, over passing the basketball, and forcing issues, with no concept of game situations.  Consequently, my teammates were standing around--watching me dribble, no offensive movement, just stagnation.  In fact, most defensive players guarding me, would just sit in their defensive stance and keep me in front of them.  Whenever, I decided to take action with the basketball it was either too soon or too late.

Fortunately for me, I was playing with guys more experienced, more seasoned, and willing to provide winning feedback.  These top notch college bound players suggested, I dribble with purpose, pass to the open man, and play as many competitive games as possible!
